Supernatural – My Perspective

Watching TV with my dear husband is a pleasurable past time, maybe even a guilty pleasure.  Together we watch, debate, argue, and make predictions about what will happen next.  Today as I worked on my capstone project, we watched a couple of season 6 episodes of Supernatural (saved on the DVR).

In the spirit of full disclosure since season 6 of Supernatural started in September, I have not only watched the show but followed the twitter feeds; listened to Winchester Radio; voted for the TV Guide cover contest and the People Choice Awards.  I think this may qualify Supernatural as a guilty pleasure, but maybe only a pleasure because I do not feel guilt about watching one of my favorite shows.  What else is there to do on a Friday night? Eat antipasto salad and garlic bread? Drink my favorite beverage? But I digress! Here a few comments about tonight’s episode, Appointment with Samarra:

Dean will do anything to get Sam’s soul back. Sam will do anything to prevent getting his soul back.  Makes for dramatic edge on the seat breathless drama! The mid-season finale left the audience wanting more but we will have to wait till January 28th to find out the results.

The episode starts with Dean inducing death so he can take a meeting with Death.  He makes a deal to have Death get Sam’s soul out of the box. Sam does not want his soul back after hearing both Cas and Crowley say his soul will be Jello. Dean thinks he can prevent anything from going wrong while he wears Death ring for 24 hours.  Meanwhile Sam summons Balthazar who gives him a spell which includes patricide.  The scenes between Sam and Bobbie are terrifying and sad but Dean comes back just in time from his humbling failure wearing Death’s ring.  The ending of the episode with Death putting Sam’s soul back and his screaming at the top of his lung is spine tingling.  Wow! What an ending! My favorite quotes:

Death:  Don’t roll your eyes Dean, its impolite

Sam: Exactly Dean it’s my life. My life, my soul and it sure hell ain’t your head that will explode when your whole scheme goes sideways!

Balthazar: Here one for the list of dumbest things ever, summon the angel who wants to kill you Sam: Desperate times

Many summaries and reviews can be found online about each Supernatural episode, not my goal to be either.  But to take my comments full circle, watching Supernatural with my husband on Friday night is a joy and pleasure.

The Love of Guilty Pleasures!

Have you ever wondered why we sometimes refuse to admit or share our love of guilty pleasures? Why have we not even acknowledged the guilty pleasure? Why do we have more than just a few guilty pleasures? Are we afraid of what others will think about our guilty pleasures if we share?  Why are they guilty pleasures anyway? Rather than embracing our guilty pleasures on occasion the question to ask is should we spend our time solely in the pursuit of hard work, intellectual pursuits, or pleasing others?

Ponder or give thought to what are your guilty pleasures? You do not say them out loud. What would your guilty pleasures include? Romance novels; Sports; surreptitiously watching your favorite soap opera, drama or comedy; are you a closet vampire lover; Team Damon or Team Edward?  Do you play Wii or Nintendo late at night when no one can notice our thrill of playing Call of Duty or God of War III or Super Mario Galaxy?

You might ask why these thoughts and why I am sharing my thoughts with the universe. I have given the subject much thought and my writing admittedly is a mechanism of procrastination because I find pleasure in writing. Quite frankly, I am procrastinating on a couple of projects that are due next week (end of the semester); besides writing I have enjoyed several other of my guilty pleasures.  You might ask what are evesgreenleaf’s guilty pleasures. Should I share?  Or should I only hint? Rather than completely sharing.

Maybe the bigger question is why do we classify any pleasure as a guilty pleasure or rather, why should we feel guilt about pleasure?  Why do we feel bad or allow others to make us feel bad when we select pleasurable activities over the popular myth that seeking pleasure is bad?  I think this is why when studying philosophy I enjoyed reading philosophers from the school of hedonism.  Common held thought by the generally puritanical society thinks that seeking pleasure is bad but is it really? Or do we need to check our paradigm?  Hedonistic philosophers through the time have varied definitions of what the true pursuit of pleasure entails.  But they all seem in agreement that seeking pleasure is not only about the pleasure but also includes the avoidance of pain. Is pleasure only physical or can it be mental or even spiritual?

Food for thought!
