The smell of paper, ink and coffee fill the air inside my local Barnes and Noble despite the section of electronic devices. Every time I visit a book store whether it’s a shiny large book store which carries all the latest magazines and books or an antiquarian’s book shop the tremendous love and excitement I experience for books and the written word is over whelming; and it stimulates a variety of memories about reading and my love affair with books and writing. As a child, I would rather read than watch TV or play outside. Books were great adventures and filled my mind with daydreams and imaginary adventures. Even going to bed was an adventure, sneaking a flash light and reading under the covers. My dear husband on occasion would get frustrated that I was paying more attention to my book than him and I have to admit occasionally it was true. The challenge was that when I discover an author who has created strong vivid characters and powerful narrative I have trouble putting the book down.
Today a friend inquired what did I like most about using my Nook. I shared with her that I enjoyed most was reading magazines and the portability to get access to information on campus without carrying a laptop. Yes, despite the sensual feel and touch by physically turning pages of a book or magazine, I do read and encourage everyone to learn and appreciate the gift of reading books and magazines digitally. At the same time, the reason for the trip to Barnes and Noble was to pick up a special book order; the latest Laurell K. Hamilton Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novel, Hit List. The novel came out in 2011 but my studies and life have allowed for little recreational reading until recently. As I run my hands over the finish of the cover, I smile and feel excitement to read a new book and wonder how long I can savor the experience.
